Mike welcomes fellow Gordon Lightfoot fan Andy Bauerle from Magee, Mississippi, to discuss this little-known gem from Lightfoot’s 1983 album Salute. The song was never released as a single, and Lightfoot apparently never performed it in concert. But that doesn't mean it isn't worthy of a closer look!

According to Lightfoot himself, Biscuit City is an idealized, fictional place—more a state of mind than an actual destination. The lyrics paint a picture of emerald waters, snow-white beaches, beautiful people, quiet streets, and residents who have plenty of money but apparently nowhere they need to be. It sounds like a pretty appealing place to spend a vacation—or perhaps the rest of one's life.

But there's something more going on. The narrator longs to escape to Biscuit City, but he also hints at sadness, nostalgia, and some unspecified misfortune that keeps him from reaching this idyllic destination. Is Biscuit City a fantasy of the perfect life, a longing for happier times, or something else entirely?

Mike and Andy also take a look at Salute, an album recorded during an important transitional period in Lightfoot's life and career. Although Salute wasn't one of Lightfoot's more commercially successful albums, “Biscuit City” offers an opportunity to appreciate the musicianship and production that went into his recordings during this period.

So pack your bags, grab your banjo, and join Mike and Andy for a musical visit to a place that doesn't appear on any map—but might just be somewhere everyone would like to go. It's “Biscuit City,” on Carefree Highway Revisited!
